It’s NOT Always About BALANCE. This May Be More Important

Loss of balance doesn't always cause falls. Older people fall because they don't respond properly when they lose balance. The ability to automatically step when balance is lost is key to preventing falls, and it can be trained. #balance #falls #elderly #health #prevention #exercise

It's not always about the balance. Oftentimes, older people fall simply because they don't respond properly when they lose their balance. Many older people lose the ability to take normal stepping responses when they lose their balance, and as a result, they fall simply because of that loss of automatically stepping when they lose their balance. And so what we'll see sometimes is people with very good balance fall because of that reason.Their bodies don't respond by stepping anymore when their balance is lost, and the reverse can also be true.We often see people with poor balance and appear quite wobbly on their feet but don't actually fall because their ability to automatically step is actually very good.So the ability to automatically respond to a loss of balance by stepping is a fundamental component when it comes to preventing falls, and this is something that can be trained, and we work with people on this all the time.
